In response to a court in Georgia today finding three white men guilty of murder and other charges for the pursuit and fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man, TCF President Mark Zuckerman released the following statement:
“The conviction today of the three men who murdered Ahmaud Arbery is welcome news, but it does not change the fact that Ahmaud Arbery should be alive today. This case was clear as day: Three white men hunted down, shot, and murdered a 25-year-old Black man—for the simple crime of jogging while Black.
“While our criminal justice system got it right today, we cannot lose sight of the fact that it is that same broken, unfair, and racist justice system that tells people like Ahmaud Arbery’s killers that they are above the law, because too often that is the case. Hopefully, today brings a semblance of peace to the Arbery family, and serves as a reminder that justice can and must be done.”
