The Century Foundation (TCF) is pleased to announce the creation of the Janice Nittoli “Forward Thinking” Award. Each year, TCF will provide a stipend of $7,500 to support an individual under thirty years of age in the research and writing of a policy paper on a topic that is central to TCF’s agenda.

Ms. Nittoli served as The Century Foundation’s president from August 2011 to March 2014, when she retired due to illness. During her tenure, Nittoli revitalized TCF, nearly doubling the foundation’s endowment and adding sixteen new policy experts to TCF’s roster. Under her watch, TCF fellows won a National Magazine Award, a Pulitzer Prize, and a MacArthur Foundation award (the institutional equivalent of the so-called genius awards). Other highlights included the release of a task force report that led to a change in U.S. policy in Afghanistan, and major new work on community colleges, on socioeconomic diversity in public schools and higher education, and on labor rights.

Operationally, Nittoli led a major overhaul of the organization. She expanded TCF’s development efforts, sold its headquarters office, launched a complete rebranding of its corporate identity, and transitioned TCF into one of the first think tanks to embrace digital-first publishing.

Since TCF’s founding nearly a century ago, the institution has first and foremost focused on ideas that would enable average workers to experience rising living standards and protection against financial loss. In today’s era of inexorably rising income and wealth inequality, that mission is more essential than ever.

The Janice Nittoli “Forward Thinking” Award ensures that a new generation of policy scholars will continue to pursue that mission of promoting economic security and opportunity for American families into TCF’s second century.
