For much of the fall, the Department of Justice seemed ready for a fight in the US Airways-American Airlines merger, claiming it would result in decreased competition and higher fares for air travelers. Last week, however, Attorney General Eric Holder announced a settlement that was, in the words of one New York Times analyst, “basically a face-saver.” Instead of drastic changes, the only thing federal regulators will require of the new airline is that it give up some landing slots and terminal equipment at a small number of airports.
