Education Fellow and Director, School Diversity Collaborative

New York City preferred

The Century Foundation (TCF), a progressive, nonpartisan think tank, seeks a fellow in the New York City office to create and direct a new national effort to promote socioeconomic and racial school integration.

Throughout the country, traditional public school leaders, charter school chiefs, and fair housing advocates are engaged in exciting work to promote school diversity, but they often do so in isolation from one another. A new foundation-funded School Diversity Collaborative will bring together representatives of these disparate communities to share ideas about best practices to embrace and pitfalls to avoid. 

The fellow will work under the supervision of senior fellows Halley Potter and Richard D. Kahlenberg, and closely with senior policy associate Michelle Burris, to launch the School Diversity Collaborative, facilitate national and regional meetings to promote peer-to-peer learning, help write reports regarding the lessons that emerge, and facilitate communication about the importance of diversity.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Launching a new initiative to promote school integration.
  • Identifying and contacting leaders in the traditional public school, charter school, and fair housing sectors who are dedicated to promoting school integration and persuading them to participate in national and regional meetings with their peers.
  • Creating a member listserv and newsletter to facilitate communication, and supervising creation of a website for the School Diversity Collaborative.
  • Planning and executing productive in-person and virtual discussions.
  • Writing reports and other resources—aimed at School Diversity Collaborative members but also for broader audiences, such as school districts, journalists, researchers, and advocates—that document best practices and highlight strategies for advancing integration. 
  • Engaging the media with stories of member successes and research on the benefits of school integration. This could include writing op-eds, delivering speeches, and appearing on radio and television. 
  • Training school leaders, teachers, parents and community members about how to discuss the importance of school integration.
  • Over time, engaging new participants to broaden the reach of the School Diversity Collaborative.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (graduate degree a plus).
  • Experience effectively organizing large groups of individuals on behalf of a larger cause. Experience working on socioeconomic and racial school integration and housing integration is a significant plus.
  • Exceptional research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Background in education policy. Five to ten years of previous related experience in public policy and/or education preferred.
  • A commitment to looking at education issues through an intersectional lens, recognizing the importance of elevating the experiences of low-income students, LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities, English learners, and students of color.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Apps (Google Docs, Sheets, Drive, etc.).
  • A commitment to progressive values and interest in TCF’s education research agenda.

Health Care Policy Intern, DC

The Century Foundation (TCF)—a think tank promoting progressive ideas and innovative practical solutions that advance opportunity, equality, and security—seeks a part-time (up to 20 hours per week) Health Care Policy Intern to be based in TCF’s Washington, DC office. The Health Care Policy Internship is a paid position (starting at $17/hour).

Position Description Summary:

The part-time Health Care Policy Intern is responsible for supporting the research needs of TCF’s Health Care Fellows.

Representative Core Responsibilities:

  • Research assistance related to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), health reform proposals, Medicaid, Medicare, abortion coverage, and other timely health care policy issues.
  • Compile research into spreadsheets, charts, graphs and memos.
  • Assistance with finalizing research reports, commentaries and other written products, including checking references, formatting, etc.
  • Help with social media promotion, including drafting tweets and language for Facebook posts.
  • Participate in meetings and events as appropriate.
  • Assist in researching potential partnership and funding opportunities
  • Maintain relevant contact lists.

Administrative tasks:

  • Copy materials.
  • Register guests for TCF health care events.
  • Publicize health care events and develop invite lists.
  • Help with personalized outreach.
  • Schedule large meetings (4 plus people).
  • Manage scheduling for the Health Care Reform Director/Sr. Fellow.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong attention to detail, highly organized, able to manage priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with spreadsheets, data calculations, and key data sets.
  • Knowledge of key search tools for accessing legislation at the federal and state levels, as well as federal laws and regulations.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills.
  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative, supportive, and proactive.
  • Ability to work a consistent part-time schedule of up to 20 hours per week.
  • Graduate and law students preferred.

Grants Manager

The Century Foundation (TCF)—a think tank promoting progressive ideas and innovative practical solutions that advance opportunity, equality, and security—seeks a proven, successful, hands-on Grants Manager who will assist the development team with our institutional giving efforts during this period of exciting growth. TCF is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization funded by revenue from our endowment, grants, and contributions from foundations, individuals, and other partners. TCF is celebrating our centennial in 2019 with initiatives and events that will position us for our next 100 years.

Job Overview

Located in our New York City office, the Grants Manager is responsible for working with TCF’s development team on our overall institutional giving for TCF. Primarily reporting to TCF’s Director of Development, the Grants Manager will be responsible for the smooth running of the organization’s grants management/reporting activities and will work closely with the Director of Development, finance team, administrative team, editorial, and TCF Fellows to implement key aspects of grant application and management, grant reporting data and files, and research on funders, along with coordination of the participatory grant seeking process. Specifically, the Grants Manager will work under the Director of Development to facilitate efficient grant management processes, maintain accurate funder–partner files. They will bring energy, vision, and creativity to further TCF’s record of innovation and achievement.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Development with all grant management activities, including, reviewing and writing proposals, keeping all grant documents organized and filed in both TCF’s project management system (Asana), DonorPerfect, and development folders
  • Manage a comprehensive calendar of past, current, and upcoming proposals and reports
  • Assist with grant proposal submissions; conduct prospect research to identify new funding opportunities for the organization
  • Keep a track of all active grants on the grants calendar and development calendar and maintain a portfolio of over eighty prospects with the Director of Development
  • Implement grant-seeking work plans to ensure policy teams are on track to meet deadlines
  • Complete due diligence review of grant applications, identifying compliance issues for the team
  • Work with the finance team to reconcile all funds received on a monthly basis, or as a grant is received, with the paperwork scanned and filed
  • Implement a grant expense authorization process, in coordination with the finance team to ensure timely grant expenditures
  • Provide Director of Development with regular progress reports and updates on grants, including prospective grants
  • Organizing all grant agreements in project management system (Asana) and our shared files and in the donor base
  • Working with Director of Development on the financial and budget related questions, as per grant agreements
  • Research, prepare, and maintain a prospecting portfolio, with eligibility requirements and priority level
  • Coordinate with development team and finance team on the preparation and review of financial reports, and revisions of approved grant budgets as necessary
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for grant fundraising targets and current status for submissions to Director of Development
  • Assist with organizing meetings and distributing agendas and related materials
  • Other duties, as required

Qualifications

  • BA or equivalent required; 3–5 years of work experience in grant writing and management
  • Strong analytical, verbal, written, organizational and communication skills
  • Keen attention to detail, and a quick learner
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office Suite is a must; experience with a project management system is a plus
  • Ability to think and work quickly and efficiently, and communicate effectively with teams
  • Solid ethics and an ability to use discretion with sensitive material
  • Willingness to be flexible and open-minded, and be a highly engaged team player
  • A sense of humor, balanced with a sincere interest in the mission

Next100 Associate Director of Operations and Program (Full-Time)

New York, NY

Next100, an initiative of The Century Foundation, is seeking a full-time Associate Director of Operations and Program to help build the organization and advance its mission of changing the face and future of progressive policy. The Associate Director will work closely with the Executive Director of Next100 to build Next100 and support the Next100 team, by developing and implementing strategic, operational, programmatic and external affairs systems and tools; conducting external outreach and engagement; and supporting the Next100 training program. The Associate Director role is full-time, and based out of our office in lower Manhattan.

About the position: We are looking for a mission-driven, systems-oriented thinker and doer with an excellent eye for detail, who is excited to take on a range of tasks and responsibilities to build and support our organization and team. This is a great opportunity for someone seeking to learn about building a nonprofit start up within the context of an established, and relatively well-resourced organization.

Duties:

  • Work directly with the Executive Director to develop, execute and continuously improve key strategic, operational, programmatic and external engagement systems for Next100, including strategic planning, performance management, budget, trainings, external outreach and engagement, and development
  • Develop written communications from Next100, including but not limited to blog posts, website copy, external outreach, and funder materials
  • Identify, design and deliver training sessions and other capacity building activities designed to advance effectiveness in making progressive policy change. 
  • Work with the Next100 team to envision, plan and execute Next100 public events that build the organization’s brand and reach
  • Support and collaborate with the policy entrepreneurs in their research and organization-building activities
  • Conduct research on potential funders, and develop proposals for funders to support Next100’s work
  • Take on research projects on behalf of the Executive Director around specific policy areas, organizational development, capacity-building, or talent management
  • Other tasks as required and assigned. We are a small startup, and we all do everything!

Requirements:

Note: While Next100 is a policy organization, and the Associate Director of Operations and Program will be working closely with the team of policy entrepreneurs, this is not primarily a policy role.
