Tonantzin Carmona is director of economic policy at The Century Foundation, focusing on policies that expand economic opportunity and strengthen economic security. Before joining The Century Foundation, Tonantzin was a fellow at the Brookings Institution, where her research focused on wealth and inequality, financial and emerging technologies, and state and local policy implementation. She previously served as special assistant to the president for economic policy at the White House National Economic Council and as senior advisor in the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Inflation Reduction Act Implementation Office.
Her research and commentary have appeared in the New York Times, Financial Times, Bloomberg, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, CNN, Politico, Fortune, Axios, Barron’s, Marketplace, and the Associated Press, among other outlets.
Earlier in her career, Tonantzin worked in the U.S. Senate as deputy press secretary to Senator Elizabeth Warren and later served as Illinois political director for Warren’s 2020 presidential campaign. In Chicago, she held leadership roles as director of the Mayor’s Office of New Americans and chief of policy to the City Clerk, where she helped lead citywide initiatives focused on immigrant integration, ID access, fines and fees reforms, and effective government.
