Katherine (Katy) Nelson is deputy director of development at The Century Foundation. She was previously senior development manager at the Roosevelt Institute and grant writer at Demos. She has been writing professionally for more than two decades. Her editorial work has appeared in numerous travel and lifestyle publications, and her grant writing has supported public policy think tanks, documentaries, universities, and human services agencies.

Katy received her bachelor’s degree in political science and English with honors in creative writing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a Morehead-Cain Scholar. She earned a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and a master of fine arts degree in creative writing from Queens University of Charlotte.

She resides in New York City, where in her spare time she writes and produces creative storytelling projects.
