America’s Maternal Mortality Crisis Is Worsening
A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that in 2021, the United States had the worst maternal mortality rate since data have been collected—an increase of roughly 40 percent from the previous year. Black women, in particular, continue to bear the brunt of this crisis, with a maternal mortality rate in 2021 that was 2.6 times higher than the rate for white women.
