House Republicans have now cleared the way to pass a budget bill that would make historic cuts to health care for middle- and working-class Americans and food assistance for kids and families while slashing taxes for the richest Americans and corporations. Ahead of the vote on the House floor, Julie Margetta Morgan, President at independent think tank The Century Foundation, issued the following statement.
“American families are looking for leaders who will make their lives safer and more secure, but this bill will instead make millions of Americans poorer, hungrier, debt laden and uninsured. The Century Foundation’s analyses show this budget will inflict immense pain on millions of American households and their communities, in order to give away billions of dollars to corporations and billionaires.
“Republican cuts to Medicaid and ACA tax credits will leave 15 million Americans uninsured, and cuts to food assistance will harm 43 million Americans, including one in five children. Health care costs will increase for tens of millions of Americans, making it less likely that families will be able to afford to see a doctor.
“Cutting public programs to pay for these tax cuts is already a massive giveaway to the wealthiest Americans. But this bill goes further by serving up opportunities for powerful, predatory companies to pad their bottom lines. For example, under this bill, private loan companies—known for engaging in predatory and deceptive practices—stand to win big at the expense of low-income students who will be saddled with insurmountable debt from high-risk loans for years to come.
“At a time when families are already struggling due to crushing price hikes stemming from the Trump administration’s reckless economic policies, this budget bill will force families to make impossible choices at kitchen tables across the country.”
The Century Foundation has done extensive research on the depth and breadth of cuts Republicans are making:
- TCF Director of Health Care Reform Jeanne Lambrew has calculated that the GOP budget bill would cause 15 million people to lose their health coverage in the next ten years.
- Former Special Assistant to the President for Labor and Workers Rachel West has crunched the numbers on children in each state and district who could be harmed by House Republicans’ $300 billion in proposed SNAP cuts.
- Former acting Labor Secretary and current TCF Senior Fellow Julie Su has described what exactly it will mean for workers when the Department of Labor is gutted.
- And 10+ TCF Senior Fellows who previously helped lead federal agencies have gone deep on what the drastic cuts at federal agencies look like for people across the country who rely on those agencies for their health, safety, and to make ends meet.
