In my forty years serving in the U.S. Congress, leading the fight with my colleagues to pass the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010 was one of my proudest achievements.
Seven years later, 20 million more Americans have quality, affordable health care coverage, people with pre-existing conditions can no longer be denied health insurance, and workers are no longer locked into jobs, for fear of losing access to health care for themselves and their loved ones.
This week has been a victory for the ACA, but the fight to protect health care for all Americans is not over.
If the Trump Administration and Congress succeed in repealing the ACA:
- 32 million Americans would lose health coverage
- Health Insurance premiums in the individual market would double
- Three quarters of the population would live in an area where the individual market would collapse, leaving people without access to any insurance plan
The Century Foundation (TCF) is on the front lines of the effort to protect health coverage for all Americans, producing regular, timely research on the consequences of every health care reform proposal.
