In response to President Biden’s 2023 State of the Union address, Century Foundation president and former deputy director of President Obama’s Domestic Policy Council Mark Zuckerman released the following statement:
“In last night’s State of the Union address, President Biden laid out in clear and compelling terms how his administration is helping everyday Americans. Landmark policies such as the bipartisan infrastructure law, the CHIPS Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act have allowed our economy to rebound from the depths of the pandemic and come out on the other side more dynamic, sustainable, and inclusive. From cutting prescription drug costs to bringing down the unemployment rate to a fifty-year low, the Biden administration has amassed an impressive track record of progress and delivered on many of its promises.
“Equally important, though: President Biden acknowledged how much remains to be done—from lowering the costs of health care, child care, and higher education, to expanding opportunity and creating more well-paying jobs for low-income people, people of color, women, and disabled people. One of the defining lessons from the pandemic was that an equitable economy is also a strong economy: when we invest in our children, our families, and our workers, everyone benefits and our economy thrives. Equitable policy has helped make the state of our union strong, and can make it even stronger going forward.”
