In response to the verdict today in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was charged with murder in the death of George Floyd, TCF President Mark Zuckerman said the following:
“Today, justice was served and a police officer was held accountable for the murder of George Floyd. We, in the words of the state attorney, ‘believed our eyes’ and the truth prevailed.
“But make no mistake: in our legal system, the truth far too often does not prevail. One act of accountability doesn’t change the fact that law enforcement regularly and routinely get off scot-free for the senseless killing of Black Americans. The scales of justice are nowhere close to being level.
“George Floyd’s murder shook the world and gave new energy to movements for long overdue racial justice and equity. This verdict is a powerful step forward in that struggle, but it is only one step. Holding police accountable and delivering equal justice requires relentless work, day in and out. This is just the beginning.”
