In response to the results of the 2018 Midterm Elections, The Century Foundation (TCF) president Mark Zuckerman issued the following statement:

“Last night was a critical moment for our democracy. Across the country, millions of voters issued a resounding message to elected leaders: there needs to be more oversight and accountability in Washington, D.C.

“Equally important, Americans showed that progressive policies and values such as expanding health care, increasing the minimum wage, and protecting the right to vote can win—in both blue and red states alike.

“We knew that the 116th Congress would present new opportunities to tackle some of our nation’s most pressing challenges. Now, with the most diverse class of lawmakers our country has ever seen, those opportunities become all the more real and urgent.

“Now is the time to hone, build support for, and advance progressive policies—from free college, to paid family leave, to public health care proposals. That’s why TCF recently published 14 Progressive Priorities for the New Congress, a report which outlines dozens of impactful actions that Congress could take to reduce inequality and expand opportunity.

“As TCF nears its 100th anniversary in 2019, the midterms serve as a reminder of the importance of our work—rigorous, independent research that has impact and makes a difference. Working with community leaders, advocates, and policymakers, we can’t wait to see what we achieve in the next two years.”
