Since it was first published in 1987, William Julius Wilson’s The Truly Disadvantaged has had an enormous impact on the way Americans understand and respond to the problems of racially and economically isolated inner-city neighborhoods. On the twenty-fifth anniversary of the book’s publication, The Century Foundation will host a symposium featuring Dr. Wilson and a roster of experts from the fields or urban poverty, urban inequality, and race relations to reflect on how the nature of concentrated poverty has changed and whether the response of the policy community has been sufficient to the challenges posed.
Confirmed participants include William Julius Wilson, Clarence Page, Claudio Sanchez, Stefanie Deluca, Kathryn Edin, Paul Jargowsky, Richard Kahlenberg, Michael Lomax, Douglas Massey, David Rusk, and Robert Sampson.
