The United States and the broader international community have been engaged in the struggle to secure a stable peace in Afghanistan for nearly ten years. For Afghans, destructive conflict has raged for 32 years. Every side’s military victories there have proved ephemeral, and a resolution to the conflict remains elusive. The international task force organized by The Century Foundation, under the leadership of Ambassadors Lakhdar Brahimi and Thomas Pickering, has been seeking to determine what kind of political path might lead to ending the war. On March 23, The Century Foundation released the Task Force report, Afghanistan: Negotiating Peace. The co-chairs, along with Task Force members James Dobbins and Lawrence Korb, briefed participants on their findings and recommendations, which explore issues of timing, process, and substantive agendas. The report is on The Century Foundation’s web site: www.tcf.org and a webcast of the event is available here.
