The Century Foundation’s Prospect for Peace Initiative hosted a luncheon with Rafi Dajani, Executive Director of the American Task Force on Palestine, Daniel Levy, Director of the Prospects for Peace Initiative at Century and Robert Malley, Middle East Director for the International Crisis Group and former advisor on Arab-Israeli Affairs to President Clinton, to discuss Rice and Riyadh: Will U.S. Shuttle Diplomacy and the Arab League Summit Kick-Start the Peace Process? The conversation highlighted the urgency of the situation in the Middle East in light of domestic Israeli and Palestinian politics, the Arab Peace Initiative offer and the lack of U.S. engagement. The speakers insisted we are currently at a turning-point in the region characterized by political and ideological fluidity, which has created historic negotiating opportunities, as well as a number of new vulnerabilities. The speakers concurred that U.S. involvement in the peace process was a crucial element in charting a way forward.
